Plans have been approved to relocate Argos to the Three Lakes Retail Park on Bawtry Road, and convert the existing Argos store in Market Cross into a customer service centre for Selby District Council and a 1,130 sq ft retail unit

The Market Cross store is one of the smallest in the Argos property portfolio and no longer meets the company’s requirements.  Moving to an 11,900 sq ft store on Three Lakes will enable Argos to become an ‘Extra’ store, stocking a greater range of products.

A customer service centre for Selby District Council will bring all council services together under one roof, improving access for residents and generating increased footfall through Market Cross.

The new retail unit will be marketed to prospective tenants immediately.  Interest in Market Cross from retailers is high following the British Council of Shopping Centres annual exhibition last week.  Joint owners of Market Cross, Dransfield Properties, showcased the centre on their exhibition stand and have several potential tenants lined up.

The plans were given the go ahead at last night’s planning committee, which approved two separate planning applications – one to change the use of the Three Lakes unit from ‘bulky goods’ to general retail use, and the second to change the use of the current Argos from general retail into financial and professional services use.

An application for the change of use at Market Cross was turned down in September despite being recommended for approval by council officers.  While the application considered this week was identical to the application made in September, it included a detailed supporting statement clearly justifying the need for the change.

An appeal lodged against the September decision will now be withdrawn.

Lindsay McLaren, PR and Marketing Manager for Market Cross Properties, said: “We believe this is the correct decision.  The addition of a one-stop-shop to Market Cross is in line with national planning policy which encourages a variety of uses in town centres.  The number of visitors to the council offices and the new retail unit will be significant, and this will have a beneficial effect on the existing shops in Market Cross.”

Work will start on construction of the new Argos store in January.
