Public invited to comment on proposals for Penistone markets area

Plans for a £15 million redevelopment of the Penistone markets area will be unveiled to the public next Thursday, 21 September at St John’s Community Centre in Penistone from 11.00 am until 7.00 pm.

The proposals follow the requirements set out in Barnsley Council’s planning brief which was published in 2005 after extensive consultation.  The brief identified an area within the town in need of redevelopment, and Barnsley based regeneration specialists Dransfield Properties have come forward with a scheme which not only meets the brief, but which delivers a comprehensive regeneration of the town centre.

The proposals include:

• New fire and ambulance stations
• A new retail market
• 45 one and two bedroom apartments in a sheltered housing scheme
• 246 town centre car parking spaces
• A Tesco foodstore, creating up to 200 local jobs
• The refurbishment of properties in the town which are currently derelict.

Members of the development team will be on hand to answer any questions and a computerised virtual tour of the proposals will be shown.

Visitors to the exhibition will be asked to comment on the proposals and will be encouraged to give their views on all aspects of the scheme.  They will also be asked which of two foodstore designs they prefer.
