Selby town centre plans a step nearer

18 July 2006

Plans have been submitted this week to relocate Selby’s communications tower from its existing location behind the Civic Centre on Portholme Road to land at the rear of the Aldi store on the Three Lakes Retail Park on Bawtry Road.

The tower houses transmitters for the police and fire emergency services, wireless broadband and mobile phone operators.  It needs to be relocated to make way for a new Selby Abbey Primary School which is being built as part of the Selby town centre redevelopment plans.

The plans for the town centre were approved by Selby District Council in March this year and will deliver three new retail units, an extension to the Morrisons store, a town centre car park and a purpose built new school.  The retail units will attract new high street retailers to the town, and encourage people to shop in Selby rather than travel to nearby centres.

A brand new primary school will give the town’s youngsters access to state of the art educational facilities, improved external play areas and a 40 place nursery, and provide teachers with all the equipment they need to deliver the demands of the modern teaching curriculum.

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, said: “Relocating the mast will bring us another step closer to delivering the plans for Selby town centre and the new primary school.  The Three Lakes Retail Park provides an opportunity to relocate the mast onto a commercial site and we believe it is the most suitable position within the town.”

Preliminary work on the redevelopment has already started, with engineers carrying out ground investigation works in the Civic Centre car park over the past few weeks.
