New jewel for Market Cross!

13 April 2006

Gordon’s Jewellers will open in Selby’s Market Cross Shopping Centre this week in a brand new 344 sq ft shop unit on Market Lane.

Trading in Selby for over 20 years, Gordon’s Jewellers previously occupied a unit in the In shops store, and is one of three Yorkshire based jewellers owned by businessman Geoff Frankle.

The move will allow the store to expend its range so they will be selling a wider selection of gifts, clocks, jewellery and crystal.

Store assistant Dot Cundall said: “We’re really excited about the new store and look forward to serving all the customers we have come to know over the past 20 years. We have had young girls come in for their first pair of earrings and then return with their daughters to do the same. It’s nice to think we can continue serving another generation from such nice premises.”

The newly constructed shop is the latest in a series of improvements made to Market Cross.  Further improvements include new seating which has recently been installed in the centre so people can take a break from shopping and watch the world go by.   Improved lighting has been introduced to increase security and complement the CCTV system installed last year, and a centrally located planter will soon be home to new trees and foliage.

Since Dransfield Properties purchased Market Cross in 2006 with partners Ethel Austin Properties they have transformed the centre.  Formerly home to vandalised units, with no regular cleaning or gardening, the centre is now a safe and pleasant place to visit.  When Dransfield took over the centre it had six vacant units, but now only has one, reflecting retailer confidence.

Plans have also been submitted to increase the storage capacity of the Argos store, again confirming retailer confidence in the centre.

David Hale, Assistant Surveyor at Dransfield Properties said, “We are delighted to welcome Gordon’s Jewellers onto Market Cross.  The centre is much improved following the refurbishment programme and demand from tenants reflects this.”

The next round of improvements for Market Cross will be the recently approved planning application to build three new retail units, an extension to Morrison’s and a new Selby Abbey Primary School.  It is currently with Government Office who will decide whether the application can proceed or whether it requires central government approval.
