Cycling boom returns record sales for Fox Valley’s Trek Bikes

Jul 2020

While some stores have seen a dramatic down-turn in trade during the UK lockdown the team at Trek at Fox Valley have never been busier.

It has been reported that 1.3 million people have bought a new bike during the lockdown and cycle retailers are definitely one sector which has seen an upturn in trade.

From commuters wanting to avoid public transport to new cyclists taking advantage of the empty roads and great spring weather; the Trek store has certainly done a brisk trade over the last three months.

The popular cycle shop initially closed when the lockdown was announced by the Government in March. As a cycle retailer they were however, permitted to trade and after putting strict covid secure measures in place, including an appointment only system, they re-opened early in April.

Since then store Manager Andy Cook and his team have had their busiest period since the store opened in November 2017.

Katy Simcock, from Trek Bikes, said: “This is something we have seen right across our stores and definitely here at Fox Valley. Customers have been really keen to not only buy new bikes, but to have their old bikes fixed and reconditioned – so our workshop team have been incredibly busy as well.

“Right across the store, from equipment and accessories including pedals and helmets we’ve been selling out and are really ready to get our new 2021 range in now at the store.”

Despite tight limits on the number of people allowed in store sales are 150% up on last year and demand continues to grow. E-bikes have been particularly popular as well as mountain bikes, with the Trek Marlin 5 being a particularly popular model over the last three months.

The store team are now looking forward to being able to relaunch their weekly ride outs, with a group of new cyclists who are keen to join group rides when they’re permitted.

Katy added: “We really want to help people get out and ride and it is really positive to see the response and passion for cycling that’s happened through this period.”

The Fox Valley shopping centre is owned and managed by Dransfield Properties. Managing Director Mark Dransfield, himself a keen cyclist, said: “We are extremely proud at Fox Valley to be one of the few locations in the UK to have a standalone Trek store.

“This has of course been an extremely difficult time for people but it’s certainly something positive we can take from this, to see more and more people turning to cycling.”
