Arcade Celebrates Anniversary Milestone

13 November 2019

Retailers, local stakeholders and the team behind Morpeth’s Sanderson Arcade came to-gether yesterday to celebrate the award winning cente’s 10th birthday.

Sanderson Arcade was launched by Joanna Lumley OBE on 12th November 2009 and ten years to the day that the transformational town centre development was launched a special celebration was held at the centre.

The birthday was marked by the unveiling of pieces of art by the local artists Sarah Farooqi and students from the King Edward VI School in Morpeth, followed by a group photo call and a special reception at Bar Luga Morpeth.

The redevelopment of the Arcade transformed a previously run-down shopping Arcade and has made Morpeth one of the north east’s leading retail destinations.

The centre remains fully let and many of the original retailers are still a key part of the town centre shopping centre, including M&S, Fat Face, Laura Ashley, O2, Clarks and New Look – as well as a host of independent companies who are a key part of the Arcade’s success.

The latest store to join the retail line up is Phase 8 which opens at the centre next month when Sanderson Arcade is on target to reach 25 million customers.

Guest speakers at the event included Oliver Vaulkhard from The Vaulkhard Group which owns Barluga and Central Bean at Sanderson Arcade, as well as James Cons who is Chairman of the REVO Gold Awards Committee.

Mark Dransfield, managing Director of Dransfield Properties Ltd, also spoke about the challenges faced by the industry over the last ten years and the need for communities and businesses to work together to deliver strong town centres.

Mark added “It is particularly rewarding to see that so many of those businesses who were with us on the opening day back in 2019 are still here today, continuing to do well and investing in the town.

“Some of them, particularly the independent businesses, really took a leap of faith and it’s great to see companies like The Jewellers Guild and Central Bean continuing to be such a bit part of the Arcade and to have them celebrating our 10th Anniversary with us.

“We look forward to continuing our collaborative work here in Morpeth to build on the success of the last decade.”

On Saturday the Morpeth Christmas Lights will be switched on with events across the town from 10am. The big switch on takes place at 5pm and the Arcade’s Festive Display pays tribute to the centre’s 10th birthday.
