Mosaic unveiled at east Manchester’s Lime Square

12 July 2019

A beautiful piece of community art has been unveiled at Lime Square in east Manchester this week.

The stunning and colourful mosaic was created last year as part of the Openshaw Festival which takes place at Lime Square every September.

The Children of the Roundhouse After School Club in Openshaw worked on the piece with the artist Gillian Parish. It has now been installed at the Lime Square Medical Centre for everyone to enjoy when they visit the east Manchester shopping centre.

The piece depicts the steam hammer which this part of east Manchester was famous for at its industrial height and is also the theme of the large entrance feature piece of art at the Ashton Old Road entrance to Lime Square.

Some of the children who took part in the art project as well as the medical centre team and members of the patient council and the Roundhouse staff took part in a special unveiling ceremony to mark the piece of art being put in place.  Latifiah, Havi and Shakala all helped create the piece along with other children who regularly attend the club.

Mell Goff, from the Lime Square Centre Management Team, said: “The piece looks absolutely stunning.

“We are delighted that it has now been put in place at the entrance to the Medical Centre so all our visitors can see and enjoy this lovely piece of art and we’d like to thank everyone who has been involved, especially the children from the Roundhouse After School Club for creating this lovely piece for the centre.”

Lime Square is owned and managed by Sheffield based Dransfield Properties. The centre management team are now working on plans for the 2019 Openshaw Festival which takes place on Saturday 7th September at Lime Square.
