Further changes to Selby plans

Architectural improvements to town centre plans

Architectural improvements to town centre plans

19 July 2005

Changes to the design of the retail units proposed for Selby town centre have been made in response to local residents who felt a traditional style was more appropriate for a market town like Selby.

The new designs are sympathetic to the surrounding conservation area and will be constructed in brick and slate.  Gable features provide the entrances to the shop units and a glass canopy along the side of the unit (adjacent to the car park) will provide shelter for shoppers walking from New Street to the centre of town.

Signage has been made an integral part of the building design, to ensure any shop signs added in the future will remain in keeping with the original design.

The building redesign is the latest change made by scheme developers Dransfield Properties as a result of extensive consultation.  The company announced last month that due to public opinion the town centre plans would now feature a central public green space. to replace the one affected by the proposals

The multi-million pound scheme aims to improve the shopping centre and attract more national retailers to the area.  The plans are expected to create 175 new jobs for the town and involve:

· ·Extending the Morrisons store on James Street
· ·Increasing the store’s town centre parking spaces
· Creating three new purpose built town centre retail units

·Enhancing and improving the Market Cross Shopping Centre.
· Delivering a purpose built primary school and nursery.

Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield, said: “We were concerned that stakeholders felt our designs were styled on out of centre retailing units, so we brought in our urban designers to look carefully at the town’s architectural features and we now have a scheme which I hope receives support and embraces the architectural heritage of the town centre.”
