Hundreds of people turned out in Selby on Saturday afternoon (December 2nd) to celebrate the Christmas Lights Switch On in the town centre and Market Cross.

There was a traditional brass band performance by the Selby Music Centre and local choir, the Hummingbirds, once again joined the annual event by singing around the Christmas tree for Christmas carols.

The stunning lights display was turned on by lucky competition winner Ola Krajewska age nine, from Selby along with Santa, The Mayor of Selby Melanie Davis and Ben Ofeudu from Phats and Small.

The lucky youngster also received a luxury Christmas hamper full of everything the family will need for Christmas day.

Free mulled wine and mince pies courtesy of Cooplands were handed out to shoppers who were enjoying the festive atmosphere accompanied by two giant toy soldiers on stilts.

The team at Market Cross once again joined the switching on of the lights with the main town’s switch on which saw a Christmas market line Selby’s streets and entertainment in the Market Square throughout the afternoon.

Alison Shipperbottom from the Market Cross team said: “We’re so pleased to be joining up with Selby Town Council again for this popular event and doing something within Market Cross to mark the switching on of the stunning lighting scheme here.

“We’ve had so many lovely comments about how nice the lights look and everyone seems to love our tree.”
