Specsavers join Marshalls Yard retailers

21 July 2005

Specsavers has signed up to take a unit at the £37 million mixed-use development at Marshalls Yard, Gainsborough, joining an ever-expanding list of national retailers who are keen to take space in the development.

One of the UK’s leading optical retailers, Specsavers has over 500 stores across the UK.  The company has recently been voted the most trusted brand of opticians in a Readers Digest brand survey and Optical Chain of the Year at Optician magazine’s annual awards.

Specsavers will occupy 1170 sq fit in unit 22 within the Britannia building, which is being sympathetically restored to create a mix of high street shops with office space above.  They join other leading retailers on Marshalls Yard including JJB, Brantano, Allied Carpets, Carphone Warehouse, Greggs, Co-op Travel and Stringers hair salon.

The eight acre edge of town development has been brought forward by the development partnership of the Yorkshire based companies Dransfield Properties Ltd and Prospect Estates.   Highway works started this week, and construction on the main site should begin before the end of this year.

Marshalls Yard will create around 1,250 new jobs in the town, transforming the former factory site into an attractive mixed-use scheme. The scheme includes 93,560 sq ft of new retail space, 34, 650 of leisure space, 18,900 sq ft of new town centre offices, 37 city living apartments, a piazza and fountain area, three restaurants and 22,650 sq ft of serviced office suites.
GGainsborough is booming with a huge growth in housing due to its geographical location to the new Robin Hood airport.  Retailers are recognising the town’s potential and take-up of the scheme is strong.

Leeds based agents Rees Denton are marketing the scheme:

Nick Rees of Rees Denton said:  “We are very pleased that yet another national retailer has signed up for Marshalls Yard.  We are delivering a high quality development in Gainsborough and this is reflected in the level of interest shown.  I look forward to announcing the arrival of other national retailers very shortly – three more are currently in the hands of solicitors!.“
