North Sheffield prepares to celebrate Tour de Yorkshire’s Fox Valley finish

27 April 2017

North Sheffield is preparing to welcome the region’s biggest bike race this weekend which will finish at Fox Valley on Sunday afternoon.

The Tour de Yorkshire starts in Bridlington tomorrow  (Friday April 28th) and the race’s dramatic climax will be at Fox Valley at around 5pm on Sunday.

Thousands of people are expected to line the route in South Yorkshire and head to Fox Valley to see the 2017 race winner receive the coveted Tour de Yorkshire Trophy.

Two million spectators lined the route for the 2016 edition of the race and it was watched by 11.4 million TV viewers in 178 countries.

The team at the north Sheffield shopping centre has organised a fantastic day of entertainment for the crowds with events also happening on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge as well as in Bolsterstone and Penistone.

As well as the pro race which 18 teams and 144 riders will compete in - 4,000 amateur riders will be leaving Fox Valley from 6:30am to tackle one of three tough routes on the hills of north Sheffield for the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride.

Entertainment and activities will run throughout the afternoon in the build up to the race finish - including performances from the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band ahead of their sell out concert at The Albert Hall next month.

The centre is also hosting a special children’s parade featuring cyclists from local schools as well as a regional food market - big screens will be showing all the race actions after the riders leave Bradford at 12pm at the start of the tour de Yorkshire’s Stage 3 which has been names “The Yorkshire Terrier.”

Fox Valley is a new town centre development which opened in June 2016 and is home to a host of national and independent retailers.

The centre was announced as the finish line for the third edition of the Tour de Yorkshire in December last year and Dransfield Properties, the company which owns and manages Fox Valley has worked alongside local groups and stakeholders to give a big South Yorkshire welcome to the event.

The whole area has been dressed with bunting, banners and land art ready to welcome the riders.

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties said: “Everyone has worked together to make the finish of the Tour de Yorkshire a really special event for our part of the county.

“We have some beautiful towns, village and countryside here and the communities have really pulled out the stops to make sure they look the best for when the cyclists come through.

“We are incredibly proud that the finish will be here at Fox Valley on Sunday and we have a fantastic day planned to celebrate the event.”
