Pedal power helps with local funding for Support Dogs charity

2 March 2016

The Sheffield based Support Dogs charity was given a welcome boost when they were presented with a £500 cheque – a donation made on behalf of the Dransfield Foundation.

The £500 donation forms part of a major fundraising push by a team of keen cyclists who cycled from Munich to Berlin in September 2015.

The 16 strong fundraising team fielded by Yorkshire based Dransfield Properties, raised more than £50,000 in their annual Tour of Europe ride last year.

The riders, who come from across the UK, have supported Action Against Cancer and Bloodwise – but a third of the funds raised every year is also donated to other charities, groups and local organisations through the Dransfield Foundation.

The Dransfield Foundation was established in April 2014 - grants and donations of more than £30,000 have been made to date.

Support Dogs, based at Jessops Riverside in Sheffield, is a charity dedicated to increasing independence and quality of life for people with a range of medical conditions. They provide, train and support specialist assistance dogs to achieve this.

Support Dogs offer three types of assistance programmes; Autism Assistance, Disability Assistance and Seizure Alert. There are currently over 70 assistance dogs in placement throughout the UK. The donation made yesterday will help to fund further training sessions for some of the assistance dogs which are already in placement with a family or undergoing their initial stages of training.

Amanda Holmes of The Dransfield Foundation said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Support Dogs - the work the charity does is absolutely amazing.  They receive no government funding and rely solely on donations to be able to provide a trained assistance dog to people who otherwise would not be able to benefit from what is often a life transforming experience.”

Danny Anderson, Fundraising Manager at the Support Dogs said: “The generous donation from The Dransfield Foundation means we can train more dogs in 2016 to transform the lives of children and adults with some of the most challenging medical conditions. Without vital support like this we simply could not continue our work. We are extremely grateful to the fantastic cyclists that fundraised and all at The Dransfield Foundation that are helping us to change lives across the country”.
