Work underway on Morpeth’s new town centre retail development

26 January 2016

Work is now well underway on the brand new £7 million retail development in Morpeth, Northumberland, which will transform a key site in the town centre and create 100 new jobs.

The new scheme will see the former Morrisons store in the town centre undergoing a major redevelopment to create three new retail units which will be taken by the popular national retailers Next, Pets at Home and Home Bargains.

The site is now enclosed with hoardings in place and the demolition work on the old Morrisons store has started. The main contractors Tolent will then make a start on the foundations and underfloor drainage followed by the installation of the services.

As well as redeveloping the former Morrisons store on its current footprint, the plans will see improvements to the layout and location of the disabled and parent parking spaces as well as the creation of a new glazed canopy along the car park’s central walkway.

The SA Taxis office is also being relocated to a new purpose built pod in the car park and the popular Morpeth Larder is being extended and remodelled with more internal space and an attractive new alfresco dining area.
The area for the new Taxi area is now enclosed with groundworks in progress, the car park walkway area has also been closed off and the roof removal is underway.

Head of Communications at Dransfield Properties, Amanda Holmes, said: “Tolent moved on to site in December and it is great to see the work progressing now with the demolition of the old Morrisons building, we should start to see the steel frame of the building taking shape early in the spring.”

The new town centre scheme is being brought forward by the award winning Sanderson Arcade developer Dransfield Properties Ltd and will open later in the year.

The north east construction company Tolent has been awarded the contact to deliver the new development – the company also built the new Morrisons store which opened in the town just over two years ago.
