Major step forward in new town centre store plans for Royton

Royton’s brand new Lidl store has taken a major step forward with the completion of the agreement to transfer the land and deliver the town centre scheme.

The move means the discount supermarket chain can start work on the long awaited development and the first soil could be cut as early as this autumn, with the new store due to open during 2016.

Oldham Council unanimously approved the plans for the new 22,000 sq. ft. Lidl earlier this year. The development, which also includes a new 100 place short stay car park, will regenerate the former Royton Assembly Hall site.

The proposals to build the supermarket were first announced after Oldham Council agreed to the sale of some council-owned land to bring forward the regeneration of the site. The development has been delivered in partnership with the Barnsley based retail specialists Dransfield Properties Ltd.

Lidl has more than 600 stores across the UK – between 25 and 30 new jobs will be created at the new Royton store.

"We are constantly striving to attract new investment, businesses and employment into the area – and when welcome interest arises we urge those businesses, like Lidl, to commit new jobs to local people.

"The arrival of the food store, from a well-known international retailer, will increase footfall to Royton, and we also feel it will complement the current retail offer, in particular the weekly market.”
