New medical centre plans outlined for Fox Valley

11 June 2015

Plans have been approved by Sheffield City Council for a brand new state of the art medical centre at the Fox Valley development in north Sheffield.

The developers of the £42 million town centre scheme, Dransfield Properties, are working together with Stocksbridge Medical Group to bring forward a brand new centre. The move is in line with the practice’s plans to expand and offer more services to its growing number of patients.

The Valley Medical Centre currently has six doctors with 9,600 registered patients.  But with no additional capacity to take on further patients and consulting rooms which don’t fit the current Care Quality Commission criteria, the practice has been looking to expand for some time.

The new Valley Medical Centre would take up part of the Fox Valley site where the Tesco store had previously been planned – it will sit alongside a pharmacy and three further retail or leisure units - including a new food store.

The new town centre development is due to open in Spring 2016.

The move will give the medical centre much larger premises which will be built to the latest Care Quality Commission guidelines. It will also have the capacity to cater for new patients, the area is expected to see a population increase of between 3,000 – 5,000 people over the next few years.

The new premises will also give the practice the opportunity to expand, offer more services to patients and take on additional GPs as well as having more convenient patient and staff parking.

It will cover 11,840 sq. ft. giving staff and patients much more space than the current premises on Johnson Street in Stocksbridge, which was last redeveloped during the 1990s.

Business manager at Stocksbridge Medical Group, Elizabeth Sedgwick, said the proposed move is a key part of ensuring the practice can continue to achieve high standards for patients as well as offering more services locally.

As well as six doctors the centre has five nursing staff and a further 14 members of the support and admin team.

Mrs Sedgwick added: “We pride ourselves on being a very good practice and we want to maintain those high standards for our patients in the future.

“The direction the NHS is moving in is definitely to bring services into the community and closer to the patients. We don’t have the space to expand our services or for any additional doctors so this move is extremely important for us as a practice.

“A new medical centre would give us much more space and flexibility as well as a better environment for patients and staff which is not only in line with current NHS guidelines but also gives us the opportunity to grow.”

The plans now have to be approved by NHS England before the move can be confirmed.

Property director at Dransfield Properties, Andrew Malley, said: “We have been speaking to the Valley Medical Centre team for some time about their need for a new medical centre in the area; we are delighted to be coming forward with these plans which answer the need for a new, up to date facility right in the heart of the community.

“We are looking to deliver a mix of uses on this part of the site where Tesco had previously planned to build a store, including a foodstore.”
