Council planners have unanimously approved the proposals for a brand new Lidl supermarket in Royton town centre.

The plans for the new 22,000 sq. ft. town centre store were given the go ahead by members of Oldham Council’s planning committee last week.

The new development will regenerate the former Royton Assembly Hall site as well as delivering a brand new town centre food store. Around 100 short stay car parking spaces will also be created in the development plans.

Lidl has more than 600 stores across the UK – between 25 and 30 new jobs will be created at the new Royton store.  The company is looking forward to getting on site as soon as possible and to opening the store next year.

The proposals to build the supermarket were first announced after Oldham Council agreed to sell some council-owned land to deliver the regeneration of the site.  The development is being brought forward in partnership with Barnsley based Dransfield Properties Ltd.

Andrew Malley, Retail Property Director for Dransfield Properties, said: “We are delighted with the outcome of the planning meeting and to have the support of the council to deliver the regeneration of this site.

"Our company has worked with Lidl on a number of projects over our 23 year history and we look forward to continuing that relationship with this delivery of Lidl’s new store in Royton.”
