Plans for new town centre store recommended for approval

10 April 2015

Plans for a new Lidl supermarket in Royton town centre have been recommended for approval by Oldham Borough Council.

The proposals for the new 22,000 sq. ft. town centre store will be discussed by members of the council’s planning committee on Wednesday evening (April 15th).

The development will regenerate the former Royton Assembly Hall site as well as bringing a brand new town centre food store and around 100 short stay car parking spaces.

Lidl has more than 600 stores across the UK – between 25 and 30 new jobs will be created at the new Royton store.

Proposals to build the supermarket were first announced after Oldham Council agreed to sell some council-owned land to deliver the regeneration of the site.  The development is being brought forward in partnership with Yorkshire based Dransfield Properties Ltd.

Andrew Malley, Retail Property Director for Dransfield Properties, said: “We have worked with Lidl on a number of projects over our company’s 23 year history and we are delighted to be working with the company on the plans for their new Royton store.

"Its great news that the application for the new store has been recommended for approved and we look forward to attending the planning meeting on Wednesday.”
