Cancer charity receives boost from Yorkshire cycle ride team

27 February 2015

Members of a Yorkshire charity cycle team who raised £50,000 in a tough Alpine challenge have this week presented a second charity with a major donation from their fundraising efforts.

The group from the annual Tour of Europe ride, organised by the Barnsley based retail property developers Dransfield Properties Ltd, donated more than £17,000 to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research earlier this month.

And this week a further £17,612.81 has been presented to Action Against Cancer at Imperial College, Hammersmith Hospital, in London. The donation will help to fund the ground breaking work which is led by the world-renowned oncologist Professor Justin Stebbing.

The group of cyclists were given the opportunity to find out more about the work undertaken at Hammersmith Hospital by Professor Stebbing and his team in improving the survival prospects and quality of life for millions of cancer sufferers worldwide.

The donation is part of the £50,000 raised by the 19-strong team of riders last year when they covered 400 miles from Trieste in Munich and climbed 14,000 ft. into the Alps before finishing their challenge in Munich.

The riders, who come from across the UK, supported both Action Against Cancer (AAC) and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research (LLR). A third of the funds raised every year is donated to other charities and groups nominated by the team of riders through the Dransfield Foundation.

Plans are now underway for the 2015 ride which will take place in September and will take the riders from last year’s finish point in Munich to the German capital of Berlin.

Action Against Cancer Chair, Hilary Craft BEM said: “We are hugely grateful to Dransfield Properties for organising their Tour of Europe ride and to all of those that took part and raised such a large amount.

The funds raised will be of significant help to Professor Stebbing’s team at Imperial College in their ground breaking pursuit of cures for cancer”.

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties Ltd, said: “Gaining an insight into the work our fundraising helps to support is always fascinating and extremely humbling. It certainly makes you realise how important this kind of support is to the vital research which is being carried out.

"Everyone on our team would like to thank all those friends, family and colleagues who supported us in the 2014 challenge – we really do appreciate every single penny that is donated.”

The annual Tour of Europe ride was started in 2007 taking a route from London to Paris. In the last eight years the riders have covered more than 2,600 miles through five different countries – since the annual ride was founded more than £336,000 has been raised for charity through the fundraising efforts of the team.
