Work gets underway on the main retail site at Fox Valley

16 January 2015

The New Year has seen the main construction work start on the site of the retail and office development at Fox Valley in north Sheffield which is bringing a new commercial heart to the area.

The ambitious £42 million project will be completed ready for a spring 2016 opening and this month has seen work start in earnest on the former steelworks land which makes up the main part of the development site – that’s now been cleared for the new town centre development.

The first phase of the project has delivered a new roundabout on the A616 Sheffield to Manchester road as well as completing a brand new warehouse facility for Tata Speciality Steel to allow the relocation of the former steel stockyard.

The main contractors Henry Boot have also been working on the ground works on both the housing, office and retail schemes in preparation for the main construction work starting this month.

A former disused steelworks building – once the works canteen – has also undergone a major refurbishment project and been brought back into use and work has started in the last two weeks on a second building which is being given a new lease of life as a modern, landmark office building as part of the overall project.

Piling and foundation work is now underway on the main retail blocks on the where 25 brand new units will be built.  The steelwork will start to go up on site early next month.

The new highways works creating an upgraded second link to the development from Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, have also started and a traffic light system has been installed while that part of the work is underway.

Fox Valley is being brought forward by the Barnsley-based firm Dransfield Properties Ltd and is transforming a 28 acre former industrial site off Manchester Road in Stocksbridge, into a vibrant mixed use development with a neighbouring residential development.

The Fox Valley development will deliver:

• Around 25 new retail units ranging from 635 to 16,000 sq. ft.
• Café and restaurant units
• Office space suitable for local businesses from 600 - 10,000 sq. ft.
• New town centre car park of approx. 600 spaces
• Comprehensive landscaping, water feature and new pedestrian links
• A new housing development neighbouring the main retail scheme

Amanda Holmes, Head of Communications at Dransfield Properties, said: “We’ve made a great deal of progress on site since work started last March, but it’s this next few months when we’ll really start to see the dramatic changes at Fox Valley and the whole development beginning to take shape.

"This is a complex site and much of the work in recent months has been preparing for this point and the start of the main town centre scheme. We’ll be celebrating this milestone in the project over the next few weeks with a special ceremony on site.”

Dransfield Properties has received an investment of £8,111,040 from the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007- 2013, which is managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government to bring forward the Fox Valley project.
