A special soil cutting ceremony has been held in east Hull to mark the start of work on a new £5 million retail development in the city.

The East Hull MP Karl Turner and Cllr Sean Chaytor from Hull City Council cut the first soil on the project which is being delivered on a 1.8 acre site on the corner of Mount Pleasant and Holderness Road.

They were joined by councillors and members of the development team to celebrate the main construction work getting underway on the long awaited scheme.

The development is being brought forward by South Yorkshire company Dransfield Properties Ltd, the local firm Geo Houlton and Sons are the main contractors on the project which will be completed  in June 2015.

The new retail development will be anchored by a 25,000 sq. ft. B&M store with a garden centre, four further new retail units will also be created. Two empty shops fronting Holderness Road are being refurbished and brought back into use as part of the overall project.

As well as bringing an attractive new retail development to this part of Holderness Road the scheme includes a new district centre car park with around 90 parking spaces.  Around 50 new jobs will be created.

Dransfield Properties also developed The Mount, which neighbours the new retail development and was awarded an RICS Pro-Yorkshire Award soon after opening in 2003.

Managing Director of Dransfield Properties Mark Dransfield, said: “We have been working towards bringing a scheme forward on this site for many years and there has been a great deal of support in the area to see further development in this part of east Hull.

"We have been worked closely with Hull City Council on this project and are delighted to have the local authorities’ support in ensuring our plans for a site, which has been in need of investment for many year, can come to fruition.  Everyone involved with the development is now looking forward to seeing the new stores completed and ready for opening next summer.”

Karl Turner MP praised the company’s approach to regeneration and welcomed the new investment in his constituency.

Hull City Council Leader, Councillor Stephen Brady said: “I welcome this further investment in East Hull by Dransfield Properties who have a strong track record of successful regeneration in the area. I want to particularly thank Mark Dransfield who, with his team, have worked tirelessly with our regeneration team over a number of years to bring this development to fruition. “
