Double celebration at Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth

Hundreds of people turned up to help start the countdown to Christmas at Sanderson Arcade on Saturday as well as celebrating the award winning centre’s 5th birthday!

The centre hosted a special birthday Lights Switch-On event on Saturday afternoon – sharing the day with six local youngsters who were also celebrating their birthdays on the same day.

The event was hosted by Metro Radio’s breakfast show presenters Steve and Karen and sponsored by Stratstone Tyneside who handed out two thousand Santa hats as well as special BMW biscuits throughout the afternoon to get everyone in the festive mood.

X-Factor’s Kerrianne Covell entertained the crowds as well as the Durham based acoustic band North Road.  The Band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers also delighted the crowds with their performances throughout the afternoon.

A special tea party was held for children sharing their birthday with the Arcade and the youngsters also joined Santa and the mayor of Morpeth Cllr Nic Best in switching the festive lights on.

Footfall at the centre topped a record breaking 13,000 mark throughout the afternoon as people turned out to see the lights, including the traditional tree in the piazza and the stunning bow on the main Bridge Street entrance which will now be lit up throughout November and December.

Santa made his traditional appearance at the event and a special birthday cake was also cut and shared with shoppers to mark the 5th birthday.

Centre manager at Sanderson Arcade Medi Parry said: “It’s always lovely to see the centre all lit up for Christmas and we hope that everyone who came along on Saturday had a really great afternoon. The Switch-On event is always busy but we really did have record breaking numbers this year.

"We wanted to make the event extra special as we’re also celebrating our 5th birthday and all our visitors and the team at Stratstone Tyneside made sure it was an event to remember. It was lovely to be able to share the celebrations with so many people and of course with the children who were celebrating their birthdays on the same day.”

Joining the birthday Lights Switch-On were, Jennifer and Rebecca Robson, Lexi Craig, Eva Sophia Moulton, Sam Sykes and Max Allen.
