Meg Munn MP welcomed to the Fox Valley development site

1 September 2014

Meg Munn, the MP for Sheffield Heeley, has taken part in a site tour of the Fox Valley development in the north of the city – the visit was organised ahead of an event in Westminster focussing on the issue of women in the construction industry.

Henry Boot Construction invited the MP to view the ambitious 15 acre former industrial site which will bring a new retail, office and housing development to Stocksbridge with direct access off the A616 Sheffield to Manchester Road. Work started on the development earlier this year.

During the visit Ms Munn was given the opportunity to find out more about the £42 million development as well as meeting some of the women who are working on the Fox Valley site as part of the Henry Boot team.

The Heeley MP is keen to see the number of women taking up careers in construction rise from its current level of 11 per cent. She is the editor of the Smith Institute’s recent report, ‘Building the Future: Women in Construction’ which examines why the industry needs more female workers.

Meg was met by representatives of Henry Boot and the Fox Valley developers Dransfield Properties Ltd.  She is hosting the event in Parliament tomorrow (Tuesday September 2nd) focussing on women in construction.

She said: “It’s great to see such a fantastic development where women are really part of the team and a company which is really committed to improving its diversity.”

Managing Director of Henry Boot Simon Carr said: “At Henry Boot we do achieve higher than the national average in terms of attracting women into the industry but we know more needs to be done. We are keen to work with Meg and with schools in the area and others in the industry to attract more women into this really dynamic and varied industry.”

Mr Carr is speaking at the event in the Houses of Parliament tomorrow (Tuesday September 2nd) which is hosted by the Heeley MP.

The new Fox Valley development will be anchored by a Tesco store and the main construction work is expected to be completed ready for a Spring 2016 opening.
Dransfield Properties has received an investment of £8,111,040 from the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007- 2013, which is managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government to bring forward the Fox Valley project.
