Councillors unanimously minded to approve new hotel in Gainsborough

21 August 2014

Plans for a new hotel in a key location in Gainsborough took a step forward this week after members of West Lindsey District Council's Planning Committee unanimously approved the development.

The decision will now be referred to Government office before it can be finally approved by the authority.

The £3 million development will transform the former Sun Inn site on the corner of Market Street and North Street with an attractively designed Edwardian style hotel housing 51 bedrooms.

The proposals have been brought forward by Dransfield Properties; the company has worked carefully on the design of the hotel ensuring it fits in with neighbouring buildings, in this prominent town centre location.

There’s been a long held aspiration for a hotel in Gainsborough in a good town centre location to boost local business and tourism. The Sun Inn closed several years ago and the new plans for the site which were approved on Wednesday (August 20th) will see the building re-developed and this disused town centre site brought back into use.

Members of WLDC's Planning Committee unanimously approved the scheme, praising the high quality of design.

A small part of the former Sun Inn is a Grade II listed building and members discussed the merits of the structure as well as the setting of the new building alongside the former Courthouse building in the town centre.

Councillors unaninimously agreed that the new building was of an extremely high standard and would enhance the area.  The application will now be referred to Government Office for the Secretary of State to decide if the application can be determined locally.

The same design team which worked on the town’s award winning Marshall’s Yard development, also brought forward by Dransfield Properties Ltd, has worked on the plans for the new hotel. The building has been designed to a traditional Edwardian design with a natural stone plinth and arched windows.

Representatives of local businesses including Ping spoke in favour of the development plans at the planning meeting.

Amanda Holmes Head of Communications at Dransfield Properties said: "We have been quite overwhelmed by the level of support from local businesses for our plans for a new hotel in the town and having the unanimous support of the councillors at the planning meeting is a great step forward in the delivery of the development.

"Members carefully weighed up the merits of the existing building and the wider benefits to the local economy of the new hotel and a redevelopment of the site. This is a key site in Gainsborough and we have worked with our architects to deliver a well designed and attractive building which will really enhance this part of the town."
