PUPILS VIEW PROPOSED NEW SCHOOL AT SELBY CONSULTATION!

14 March 2005

Children from Selby Abbey C E Primary School were among the hundreds of visitors who viewed the new plans for Selby Town Centre at a public consultation session in the town.

If the plans are given the go ahead Selby Abbey Primary will be relocated to a brand new state of the art school fronting Porthome Road in Selby.

The Yorkshire based regeneration specialists Dransfield Properties Ltd unveiled the multi million pound plans at a two day public consultation held in a unit at Market Cross Shopping Centre which the company bought eariler this year.

Dransfield Properties believe the development blueprint for the heart of Selby’s shopping district will regenerate the area - bringing 175 new jobs as well as attracting more national retailers and delivering a new school.

The new proposals involve

• Extending the Morrisons store on James St
• Increasing the stores town centre car parking spaces from 234 to 406
• Creating three new purpose built town centre retail units
• Enhancing and improving the Market Cross Shopping Centre

The development has been designed to form a contiguous link with the existing Market Cross Shopping Centre.

Last year Dransfield Properties opened the first phase of the Three Lakes Retail Park on Bawtry Road in Selby. Later this Spring work is due to start on the second phase of that development.

The company also has experience of working within district centres and market towns and is now proposing the scheme to regenerate the heart of Selby’s shopping area.

The existing Market Cross Shopping Centre in Selby consists of 22 units within 48,000 sq ft of retail space, at present two units are empty.

Everyone attending the consultation were given the chance to fill in comment sheets giving their views about the development.

Public Relations Executive for Dransfield Properties, Amanda Holmes, said: "We will now go away and analyse the responses we have had from the public about the scheme.

"This is the purpose of a public consultation session of this kind and we believe that engaging with the wider community at this early stage in any development is extremely important.

“Relocating Selby Abbey Primary School is a vital part of the scheme and we are working closely with the staff and governors to ensure we bring forward a new, state of the art building for future generations."
