Selby Town Centre Development
PLANS UNVEILED FOR SELBY TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION!
9 March 2005
The Yorkshire based regeneration specialists Dransfield Properties Ltd have unveiled exciting multi million pound plans to bring new life to the heart of Selby Town Centre.
The scheme has been unveiled today during a two-day public consultation session about the ambitious new development, which is being held in the town.
Dransfield Properties Ltd is putting forward the development blueprint for the heart of Selby’s shopping district, which is aimed at attracting more national retailers to the area as well as delivering a brand new Selby Abbey Primary School.
The new plans involve
• Extending the Morrisons store on James St from 48,244 sq ft to 71,795 sq ft
• Increasing the stores town centre car parking spaces from 234 to 406
• Creating three new purpose built town centre retail units
• Enhancing and improving the Market Cross Shopping Centre
The development has been designed to form a contiguous link with the existing Market Cross Shopping Centre, which has been purchased by Dransfield Properties.
Last year Dransfield Properties opened the first phase of the Three Lakes Retail Park on Bawtry Road in Selby. Later this Spring work is due to start on the second phase of that development.
The company also has experience of working within district centres and market town centre and is now proposing the scheme to regenerate the heart of Selby’s shopping area.
The existing Market Cross Shopping Centre in Selby consists of 22 units within 48,000 sq ft of retail space, at present two units are empty. The centre is being remodeled as part of the redevelopment plans for the area.
The ambitious proposals are presently on view at a two day public consultation at the Market Cross Shopping Centre, in the vacant unit next to Selles the chemist.
The consultation sessions are being held today (Wednesday March 9th) from 12.30pm to 6pm and tomorrow (Thursday March 10th) from 12pm to 7pm.
Everyone who attends will be given the chance to speak to the professional team and fill in comment forms giving their views on the development proposals.
Mark Dransfield, Managing Director for Dransfield Properties Ltd said: “We have been working on this development now for several months and we are confident that we have a scheme which will answer the need for a larger, more accessible supermarket in the town centre as well as delivering new non food retail space and bringing improvements to the existing Market Cross Centre.
“We know from our work at the Three Lakes Retail Park that there are a number of major national retailers keen trade in Selby and the non food element of our plans will provide the right kind of purpose built accommodation within the existing town centre.
“Relocating the school is a vital part of the scheme and we are working closely with the staff and governors to ensure we bring forward a new, state of the art building which is purpose built for the demands of modern teaching methods.”
The company is keen for as many people as possible to visit the exhibition and it’s hoped that staff and pupils at Selby Abbey Primary School will also attend.
