Work gets underway on Penistone’s Gateway development

22 May 2013

Work is underway on the final phase of Penistone's town centre regeneration scheme - bringing a brand new commercial development to the heart of the town.

The transformation of this key site, which fronts St Mary's Street, is the final piece of the jigsaw of the town centre development which has been delivered by Barnsley based company Dransfield Properties Ltd, working in partnership with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

The company has attracted £1.2 million of investment from the European Union to bring forward this final phase of the project with grant funding through the European Regional Development Fund as part of the support for the region's economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007-13.

Construction work started earlier this month and is expected to be completed ready for opening in November when businesses will be able to move into their new office and commercial units.

Cllr Steve Houghton, leader of BMBC will mark the start of the work at soil cutting ceremony being held at 1pm on Tuesday May 28th along with members of the development team and other local councillors and stakeholders.

The earlier phases of the £15 million town centre regeneration scheme included a new Tesco foodstore and town centre car park as well as an award winning oak built market hall. The town's fire and ambulance stations were also relocated in 2009 to brand new purpose built premises at Springvale in Penistone.

Several local businesses are already committed to taking space in the Gateway once it's completed. The new development will accommodate up to 80 jobs as well as regenerating a run-down site in the town bringing:

  • Six new commercial units ranging in size from 1,200 sq ft to 2,400 sq ft
  • Up to 21 first floor office units for start up businesses
  • 25 new staff car parking spaces
  • A shared lobby and facilities

Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield said: "We are delighted to be starting work on the Gateway project, there has been a great deal of support for this final phase of the development. The scheme has been designed to fit in with the street scene and also with the new markets areas so it really will bring something new and enhance this part of the town.

"We've had a good deal of interest from companies keen to move or relocate into Penistone - which is great news for the local economy and shows the confidence that exists in the area."
