Selby greengrocer all set for Mary Queen of Shops Style Makeover!

The popular family run greengrocers shop at Selby’s Market Cross is moving to a brand new unit in the centre with a fantastic shop fit inspired by a TV makeover show.

Steve and Sarah Ingle, of William Ellis Greengrocers have traded in the town since   2005. Now they’re on the move to a bigger unit at Market Cross with a brand new look to their store and a new name for the business.

In their search for the perfect shop interior the husband and wife team travelled to Hoylake in the North West to look at the 3 Sisters Greengrocers which featured on the BBC programme Mary Queen of Shops.

The show, which aired earlier this year, featured three sisters who were struggling to make a success of the business they had bought. The programme ended with a completely refurbished shop which inspired Steve and Sarah to find out more.

Steve, aged 39, said: “It was great going over to have a look at the shop after seeing it on the TV show; we have taken a lot of positive ideas and can’t wait to get started.

“The shop we have now has been a greengrocers for 23 years and has served its purpose but moving in to the new unit gives us a really great opportunity to have something that is purpose built but still with a really traditional feel.”

Steve and Sarah, who have three sons, inherited the name when they took on the business – now they are planning to call their new shop Ingles Greengrocers.

They’re going from their present unit next to Morley’s Butchers just across the walkway to a bigger 1283 sq ft unit located between Jack Fultons and Santander.

Steve is the third generation of his family to go into the trade. He added: “Market Cross is a lovely centre and we want to be here for at least another ten years.”

Market Cross is owned by Dransfield Properties Ltd, Development Surveyor David Hale said the company is working on an improvement programme on some shop fronts throughout the centre.  Plans are also being drawn up for new branding and signage.

The frontage of Steve’s new store has just been completed and work is due to get started in the next few days on his fit out, ready for an October re-launch.

David said: “We are delighted that Steve is relocating within Market Cross and taking on a new lease at the centre for a further ten years. We got some great ideas from visiting the greengrocers at Hoylake and we can’t wait to see the new store when it’s completed.”

The relocation comes as Yorkshire Bank has also just renewed their lease for a further ten years and the popular butchers Morleys have also renewed for 15. Thomas Cook and Cooplands have also renewed for a further five years.

David added: “We are delighted with the levels of interest and continued commitment to Market Cross from local and national companies.”
